TINUBU HAILS PA FASORANTI AS ELDER STATESMAN TURNS 100

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm felicitations to Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the revered Afenifere leader, as the elder statesman celebrates his 100th birthday on May 11.

In a heartfelt tribute released on Sunday, President Tinubu described his joy as boundless, praising Fasoranti as a father, administrator, pro-democracy activist, prominent politician, and foremost Yoruba leader whose life exemplifies dedicated service to Nigeria.

“Pa Fasoranti has distinguished himself through a disciplined, principle-driven life committed to noble causes, integrity, and honest leadership”, the President wrote.

President Tinubu noted that the centenarian’s journey reflects true statesmanship and the Yoruba ethos of Omoluabi, emphasizing good conduct and ideals. His unwavering belief in these values has earned him widespread respect across the nation.

The President’s message highlighted Fasoranti’s strong educational foundation and lasting contributions to the sector. He earned a degree in English/Geography from the University College Ibadan, a postgraduate diploma from the University of Hull in the UK, and a Master’s in Education Administration from Maguire University in Australia.

Fasoranti taught at institutions including Ondo Boys’ High School and founded notable schools such as Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy in memory of his late wife.

Tinubu also noted that Fasoranti’s political legacy was equally profound as a disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. “He served in the Action Group during the First Republic and the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the Second Republic, where he was Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under Chief Adekunle Ajasin, earning acclaim for his financial prudence and integrity. In the post-military era, he emerged as a leading voice against dictatorship and became the authentic leader of the pan-Yoruba group Afenifere following the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya.”

“Throughout his life, Pa Fasoranti faced significant trials, including an assassination attempt by agents of the late General Sani Abacha regime, the death of his beloved wife in 1991, and the tragic killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019. Despite these challenges, he has remained resilient, continuing to advocate for Yoruba unity, democracy, and national development.”

President Tinubu expressed profound gratitude for Fasoranti’s support during his presidential campaign, recalling a visit to Akure where the elder statesman prayed for his victory and expressed confidence in witnessing his ascension to office. Tinubu thanked Pa Fasoranti for his continued prayers and backing of the Renewed Hope Administration, while praying for the nonagenarian’s good health and many more years of impactful presence.
